School of Engineering Challenge Day

The School of Engineering’s Dr Colin Dowding and Alex Borman recently hosted a Challenge Day for schools in Lincolnshire to participate in.

Four year 12 students from schools Priory Academy LSST and Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School competed to build the lightest bracket which could hold 5kg from acrylic suspended from a vice.

They were taught how to use static structural analysis tools in computer aided design (CAD) to graphically guide them in removing unnecessary material.

Their designs were then laser cut before their eyes and tested using polarised light to show real time stress concentration develop as the load increased.

Both teams delivered widely different solutions both of which were successful.

The challenge day illustrated to students how modern engineering can often require team effort, where many aspects of science are utilised to deliver a successful outcome.
